3rd Annual Conference
Magkasama: Stories of Healing, Resilience, and Fortitude
January 14-15, 2023
Dynamico Space & Virtual
San Francisco, CA
-
As Filipinx/a/o Americans, we are a product of unique narratives built on struggles and strength. These narratives, when given the space to be shared and heard, allow for the formation of the strongest of bonds. In our first ever in-person conference, we hope to acknowledge and celebrate our shared identities as Filipinx American individuals, as doctors and doctors-in-training, and as a diaspora community. Through this conference, we can inspire each other to become better individuals and physicians while building community and sharing stories of healing, resilience, and fortitude.

2nd Annual Conference
Ikaw, Ako, Tayo: Our Identities Interwoven
November 13-14, 2021
Virtual
United States
—
Our conference’s theme this year is “Ikaw, Ako, Tayo (You, Me, Us): Our Identities Interwoven.” in order to celebrate the multiple identities that each of us hold. We, ourselves, are all woven together by the intersectionality of our various unique identities past and present, struggles overcome, and strengths gained. We designed this conference to uplift the lived Filipinx American experience in all its different facets in order to acknowledge and celebrate our shared identities as individuals, as physicians and physicians-in-training, and as a global community. We hope that through this conference, we not only inspire each other to grow in our own personal journeys, but to also build community and connection with each other.
Inaugural Conference
Isang Bagsak: United in Health
October 10-11, 2020
Virtual
United States
—
Our conference’s message is “Isang Bagsak: United in Health”. Isang Bagsak (“one fall” or “one down” in Filipino) signifies that we rise and fall together. It is associated with the Unity Clap, which originated during the United Farm Workers Movement in the 1960s among Filipinx and Latinx American laborers overcoming language barriers by organizing around common struggles and experiences. The Unity Clap begins with a slow, rhythmic applause that mimics a heartbeat, increases in speed, and culminates with an individual or group shouting, “Isang Bagsak." The community responds with a single clap or stomp in union.
During this conference, we, the members of CYFAM, will share our experiences and challenges as physicians and trainees of color across the educational pipeline. We hope to unify our dispersed kababayan ("fellow countryfolk" in Filipino) in medicine through a call to action. This conference is a safe space and celebration of our unique Filipinx stories, wisdom, and dreams for a healthier Filipinx American community. In addition to providing inspiration, knowledge, and medical resources to our community, we most importantly represent robust evidence that our Filipinx culture is the foundation for physician leadership for generations to come.
